Recently, multiple sources have reported that Samsung Electronics is diligently preparing a groundbreaking innovation—planning to launch its first rollable screen smartphone in 2025. The standout feature of this phone is its unique screen design, which can expand to an astonishing 12.4 inches, offering users an unprecedented visual experience. This news undoubtedly sends shockwaves through the tech world, signaling that the smartphone form factor is about to enter a new era.
Samsung's exploration of rollable screen technology has not happened overnight. Several years ago, Samsung began laying the groundwork for flexible display technology and has showcased related concept products on multiple occasions. The upcoming rollable screen smartphone is the culmination of years of technological accumulation and innovation. Reportedly, the phone will feature an advanced flexible OLED screen, utilizing a precise sliding mechanism to achieve screen expansion and retraction. Additionally, to enhance user experience, Samsung will employ under-display camera technology, cleverly hiding the selfie camera beneath the screen, maintaining the integrity of the display while enhancing aesthetics.
As foldable smartphones have officially launched and rapidly expanded, manufacturers are also accelerating their efforts in rollable screen commercialization. In addition to Samsung, other smartphone makers such as Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Lenovo, TCL, and Xiaomi have also announced their rollable screen technologies. It is evident that, following the regular production of foldable smartphones, manufacturers are now turning their attention to the new form of rollable screen technology.
Prototypes of rollable phones have previously been showcased, including a device by Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Oppo in 2020 that can switch between 6.7 inches and 7.4 inches formats. LG is also developing a rollable device, but the company shut down its smartphone division before the product could be released. Reports indicate that this device measures 7.4 inches when fully expanded and can shrink to 6.8 inches when rolled up.
Despite the interest from smartphone manufacturers in rollable devices, no rollable products have been released to the market, nor have any announced entry into the mainstream market. Rumors about Samsung attempting to be the first company to launch a rollable phone remain just that—rumors—since there are currently no reports, confirmations, or indications suggesting that the company is moving in this direction.
